🌟 Making Learning Fun and Interactive with Kahoot!

💬 “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”  Benjamin Franklin...one of my favorite quotes!

🧖‍♀️ Bringing Play Into Learning

As an educator, one of my biggest goals is to keep students engaged and excited about learning. Whether I’m teaching theory, anatomy, or hands-on spa techniques, I’ve learned that when students are having fun, they’re more open to learning.

One of my favorite tools to spark that energy in the classroom is Kahoot!

Kahoot! is a free, game-based learning platform that transforms ordinary review sessions into interactive, laughter-filled competitions. It’s simple, visual, and incredibly effective at bringing students together, even the quiet ones, in a way that feels like play but still supports deep learning.

💡 Why I Love Using Kahoot!

What makes Kahoot! so powerful is how it combines competition, instant feedback, and collaboration all in one platform.

Students answer multiple-choice questions on their own devices while results appear instantly on the screen. The real-time feedback not only keeps them engaged but also helps instructors identify which topics need extra review.

💬 In my esthetics classes at Vancouver Community College, I often use Kahoot! to review anatomy, skin conditions, and product knowledge. The friendly competition always lifts the energy in the room, and students leave feeling confident and connected.

🎓 Mini Lesson: How to Use Kahoot!

🧠 By the end of this lesson, you’ll know how to create, host, and review a Kahoot! quiz to support active learning and formative assessment.

🪄 Step 1: Create Your Free Account

  1. Visit www.kahoot.com

  2. Sign up for a free educator account.

  3. Explore the dashboard — you’ll see tabs for Discover, Create, and Reports.

🧩 Step 2: Build Your First Quiz

  1. Click Create in the top-right corner.

  2. Choose your quiz type (Quiz, True or False, or Poll).

  3. Add your questions, answers, and time limits.

  4. Enhance engagement with images or short videos. Pull your pictures/images from Unsplash, not Shutterstock. Some of Shutterstock's pictures are free, but all of Unsplash's pictures are free.

  5. Save and preview your Kahoot!

💡 Pro Tip: Add one fun question unrelated to the lesson (like “Which spa treatment would you choose on a desert island?”) — it helps relax the group and keeps energy high.

💻 Step 3: Host Your Game

  1. Click Play and choose a mode:

    • 🎤 Teach Mode – Live in class or over Zoom.

    • 🕓 Assign Mode – Self-paced for homework or review.

  2. Share your game PIN with students so they can join on their phones or laptops.

  3. Start your quiz and let the fun begin!

💬 Watch the excitement build as students race to answer correctly. It’s the perfect energy boost for long theory days.

📊 Step 4: Review and Reflect

After the game, click on Reports to see how your class performed. Kahoot! provides an instant breakdown of correct and incorrect answers, so you can easily identify learning gaps.

Teaching Benefit: This makes Kahoot! a great formative assessment tool as you can quickly adjust your next lesson based on what students need to review.
