"Synchronous online instruction allows a richer set of interactions" (John Villasenor, 2022).
I can identify with what John is saying as I am deep in this new wave of instructing.
I will need to perfect my online instructing presence and execution. Understanding how to present information in a virtual classroom clearly and affectively will be a priority. I will need to prepare in ways like, educating myself more on how to utilize different programs on the computer. Also, being able to educate my students on the same thing so they can also use and find information online with ease and present or share within the virtual classroom. Finding exercises and learning games to make the virtual classroom stimulating and engaging will be key, and making these programs easily accessible for students.
I believe that we all thought online learning was inferior to in classroom learning, but I agree with John about how we are all surprised at how well it is actually working for the students and instructors. How it is connecting with students on a different level, but the progress from students is still there. This is the way forward and everyone is embracing the change, even though it was hard in the beginning.
Another great point John brings up is that the virtual classroom is a safe space for certain students to speak up and make comments, whereas in the "in person" classroom they may not of. I know this does not run true for everyone, as some students really thrive on social interaction, especially if they are social cognitive learners. "Social cognitive learning theory highlights the idea that much human learning occurs in a social environment. By observing others, people acquire knowledge, rules, skills, strategies, beliefs, and attitudes" (Merriam, Sharan B. 2014). So, I think that the social cognitive learners will need to adapt more to the virtual environment which is better suited for the Andragogy, self directed learner. There will be a combination of in class and online learning going forward but ultimately I think online learning will take over the majority of classroom time. This new style can reach so many other countries so guest speakers don't have to get on a plane, and students from all realms can learn together. It is inevitable.
